Dr. Brorson is a neurologist specializing in vascular neurology, with over 25 years of patient care experience, as well as experience in basic and clinical research. His laboratory work focused on mechanisms of neuronal cell death pertinent to acute brain insults including ischemia, excitotoxicity, and metabolic derangements. His clinical interests focus on the treatment and prevention of stroke, and the management of diverse aspects of cerebrovascular disease, including carotid stenosis, intracranial arterial stenosis, intracranial aneurysms, hypercoagulable disorders, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and stroke in the young. He has served as site PI for several clinical trials in secondary stroke prevention. Currently he is medical director of the University of Chicago Comprehensive Stroke Center, which cares for over 400 stroke patients annually.
Dr. Brorson has been the Vascular Neurology Program Director since 2020.
Elisheva Coleman MD

Elisheva “Sheva” Coleman is a board-certified Vascular Neurologist. She completed medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, neurology residency at Northwestern, and stroke fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. She subsequently joined the faculty at University of Cincinnati, which serves as the National Coordinating Center for the NIH StrokeNET stroke trials consortium, and was extensively involved in clinical trial work in all phases of stroke (prevention, acute treatment, recovery). She joined the faculty at University of Chicago in April 2020 and is excited to bring her clinical trial experience to UCM, where she will be the site PI for the DISCOVERY study, a multi-center observational stroke recovery study. She is particularly interested in stroke recovery and rehabilitation, especially of aphasia. A Chicago native who grew up in Hyde Park, she is thrilled to have returned home.
Fernando Goldenberg MD

Fernando Goldenberg, MD, is a specialist in critical care medicine with sub-specialization in neurocritical care. He is a member of a multidisciplinary team of experts working in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro-ICU). This team is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of patients with ischemic (low blood flow) and hemorrhagic (blood vessel rupture) stroke and brain aneurysms. He also specializes in the management of critically ill patients with brain tumors, cerebral edema, status epilepticus, as well as patients with severe Guillain-Barre syndrome and respiratory failure associated with myasthenia gravis.
Tareq Kass-Hout MD

I am pleased to announce that Tareq Kass-Hout, MD has joined the Department of Neurology at University of Chicago as Assistant Professor of Neurology and the Department’s Inpatient Medical Director and Director of the Neuro-endovascular Service. He is a unique addition to our department as our first endovascular trained neurologist which is of major importance to our comprehensive stroke center and the hospital and a significant novel benefit for our trainees.
Dr. Kass-Hout received his medical doctorate at Damascus University School of medicine in 2006 after which he completed his neurology residency training at the Jacob Neurological Institute at the University at Buffalo. Following completion of his residency, he completed a vascular neurology fellowship at Emory University, a Neuro-Critical care fellowship at the University of Miami, and an Endovascular Neurosurgery fellowship at Rutgers University. Following training and working on the east coast, Dr. Kass-Hout joined Rush University Medical Center where he served as an assistant professor of neurology, neurosurgery and radiology.
He is a board certified Neurologist, Vascular Neurologist, and Neurointerventionalist specializing in minimally invasive treatments of vascular disease of the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Kass-Hout has many publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. His research interests include ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, cerebral aneurysm treatment, and advanced neuroimaging. Kass-Hout's clinical practice will focus on cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and fistulas of the brain and spine, intracranial atherosclerosis, carotid artery disease, acute stroke thrombectomy, pseudotumor cerebri, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and preoperative tumor embolization of the brain and spine.

Scott Mendelson MD PhD

Dr. Scott J. Mendelson is Assistant Professor of Neurology with subspecialty training in vascular neurology. Dr. Mendelson is a health services researcher with expertise in systems of acute stroke care. His research interests include developing strategies to reduce delay in emergency room care and interhospital transfers of stroke patients. His research has revealed racial disparities in acute stroke patients providing informed consent for tPA.

James Siegler MD

With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications including original research manuscripts, reviews, and textbook chapters, Dr. Siegler's research interests include atherosclerotic disease, perfusion imaging, and eligibility of neurointervention for acute intracranial occlusion. Dr. Siegler is also a passionate medical educator, with a focus in asynchronous educational tools. He is well-known for previously producing an independent neuromedical podcast titled BrainWaves, as well as the official podcasts for the Neurocritical Care Society, American Academy of Neurology, and the journal Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology. Among his other responsibilities, he currently serves as a Deputy Editor for the Disputes and Debates section of Neurology, serves on the E-learning Subcommittee for the American Academy of Neurology, and manages the Digital Strategy Team for Stroke: Vascular and Interventional Neurology.
