Comprehensive Stroke Center

The University of Chicago Medicine is a Joint Commission-Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, nationally recognized for its expertise in providing the highest level of care for stroke patients.

UCM is the first academic medical center in the Chicago region to receive this recognition (click here for more information).  This was a enormous undertaking that took many months of planning led by James Brorson MD joined by Cedric McKoy RN and the entire NICU and stroke staff as well as countless other physicians and nurses.

Here, a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neurointensive care specialists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, advanced practice nurses, therapists and other experts provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic care for people with the following disorders:

  • Ischemic stroke
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke")
  • Critical narrowing or blockages of brain blood vessels
  • Intracerebral hemorrhage
  • Aneurysms, subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Vascular malformations of the brain
  • Vascular tumors of the brain and head/neck region
  • Venous occlusions such as dural sinus thrombosis and cortical vein thrombosis

Our goal is to provide comprehensive, individualized care that will help our patients recover to achieve the best quality of life possible.
