Joint Arrangement - Clarification & Ranking Process
The University of Neurology Residency program is listed as having a "Joint Arrangement" Status on
the NRMP and
ERAS websites; what does this mean?
Our program offers a joint arrangement for the PGY-I preliminary year with
The University of Chicago Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine,
The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine/Northshore and also with
Weiss Hospital Department of Internal Medicine.
Only applicants who are matched to our advanced program may also be matched to one of the joint preliminary program positions mentioned above.
How do interested candidates list these joint positions on the rank list?
Although the joint arrangments give candidates a better chance at matching in one of the internal medicine programs listed above, the match is not
guaranteed because we are not a categorical program.
A candidate who interviews with our program and also with The University of Chicago Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine and/or The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine/Northshore
Department of Internal Medicine, and/or Weiss Hospital Department of Internal Medicine has the following options when submitting his/her rank list with respect
to the joint positions:
- Ranking only the advanced program (Neurology PGY-II through PGY-IV)
This is coded as 1160180A0 on the primary rank list.
A candidate would select this option if he/she is not interested in completing the preliminary year at The University of Chicago Medical Center
Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine/Northshore Department of Internal Medicine or Weiss Hospital Department of Internal Medicine.
Candidates do have the option of ranking ONLY our program if they are not interested in completing their PGY-I year at one of the internal medicine programs
listed above. They will still be eligible to match with us, even though we have these joint arrangements in place. We do not require our residents to complete
their internship year at The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine/Northshore Department of Internal Medicine or
at Weiss Hospital Internal Medicine.
