2009 Interview Season - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How many positions do you offer?

We offer five positions per year.

  2. How do I apply to your program?

Interested parties must apply to our program using ERAS. Visit our "How to Apply" page for more information.

  3. Your program is listed as having a "Joint Arrangement" Status on the NRMP and ERAS websites; what does this mean?

Our program offers a joint arrangement for the PGY-I preliminary year with The University of Chicago Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Chicago Department of Internal Medicine/Northshore and also with Weiss Hospital Department of Internal Medicine. Only applicants who are matched to our advanced program may also be matched to one of the joint preliminary program positions.

  4. Do I have to apply for one (or all) of these preliminary positions in order to be considered for a position in your advanced program?

No, we do not require our residents to complete their PGY-I training at one of the preliminary programs listed above; applicants who wish to complete their PGY-I training elsewhere are still eligible to apply for a position (PGY-II through PGY-IV ) in our program.

  5. Do I have to apply separately to one of the preliminary programs mentioned above?

Yes, interested applicants must apply to one (or all) of these preliminary programs separately via ERAS. The joint arrangement with these internal medicine programs should not be viewed as a guarantee that applicants will be offered a preliminary position in one of these programs. Interested applicants must complete a separate interview process (if interested) with one, two or all of these programs.

  6. When will your program begin interviewing applicants?

We will begin interviewing applicants in December 2009 and will continue through January 2010.

  7. How will I know if I am going to be offered an interview with your program?

Invitations to interview with our program will be sent via email through ERAS.

  8. What can I expect on the interview day?

A final itinerary will be provided to applicants once they arrive on campus. Interviews will take place in the morning followed by lunch with the current residents and fellows. The day will conclude with a tour of the campus and the department (the tour will be given by our Chief Residents).

  9. Will I have an opportunity to meet with your current residents during my interview?

Yes; we will host a dinner on the Wednesday evening before the interview. All of our current residents will be invited to attend this dinner (our Neurology faculty will not be present at this informal dinner). Applicants will have further opportunity to meet and talk with our current residents and fellows at lunch during the interview day.

  10. Does your program offer lodging for the interview?

No; applicants must secure their own lodging and transportation to and from the interview.

  11. Which Chicago airport should I use when I make my travel arrangements?

Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) is located 13 miles from the campus. Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is located 26 miles from the campus. Applicants must secure their own transportation to and from the hotel of their choosing and also to and from the interview.

  12. If I live in/near Chicago, where should I park?

Please park in the Maryland Avenue Parking Structure located at Cottage Grove and 59th St. We will provide you with parking passes so that you may park your vehicle without cost.
