Clinical Interests
  • Dr. Frank’s is considered one of the foremost experts on the management of life-threatening brain-swelling after stroke, and he was the lead Principal Investigator for a NINDS sponsored multi-center clinical trial to determine the efficacy of surgical decompression for brain swelling after stroke for which the University of Chicago was the coordinating center. In addition, Dr. Frank has clinical research projects related to intracerebral hemorrhage, neurological prognostication, and brain death.
Research Interests
  • Dr. Frank is an internationally recognized leader in the field of neurointensive care and cerebrovascular neurology. A respected clinical scholar, he has trained physicians in his field from all over the world. Dr Frank came to the University of Chicago in 1999 where he has established one of the most reputable neurointensive care programs in the country. His joint appointment in the Section of Neurosurgery and broad clinically collaborative initiatives with leaders in other specialties, underscores the breadth and strengths of the clinical and academic programs he has built. Dr Frank is the immediate past chairman of the Critical Care and Emergency Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology, Chairman of the Early Cerebrovascular Career Committee and a member of the Leadership Committee of the American Stroke Association, a Founder and on the Board of Directors of the Neurocritical Care Society, and an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. These national leadership positions help keep the University at the cutting edge of the treatment of patients with acute problems of the nervous system. Dr. Frank’s clinical focus is on neurointensive care and cerebrovascular neurology. He has an active clinical research program with projects focused on cerebral infarction-associated brain swelling, neurological prognostication, brain death, novel acute stroke therapies, new approaches to the management of intracerebral hemorrhage, neurointensive care applications of transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, and others.
